The PHS girls soccer team opened their season and conference play with a convincing 7-0 victory over the Lee Williams Volunteers. The Badgers came out flying and six minutes into the game Lily Jensen scored the first goal of the season. Five minutes later the Badgers would score their second of the half off an Emma Alvarez goal. Speaking on the first half coach Campuzano was optimistic, “I am usually entering the half time talk with a list of things that went wrong in the first half. But tonight was different. The girls had a great warm up and from the opening chance 20 seconds into the game the played a great soccer”. The Badger defense would once again assert themselves in the second half and control the ball and pace of play. The play of Katie Kasun, Shelby Cecil, Melia Hoyt, and Hailey Mayhan made life easy for the offense by shutting down any attacking play by the Volunteers. Seniors Erika Smith, two goals and Emma Townsend, one goal put the game out of reach with their relentless attacking. Emma Alvarez would tally her second goal late in the game with freshman Nicole Raiss added the first goal of her Badger career. After the game coach Campuzano was cautiously optimistic. “Lee Williams is a solid well coached team. So the score was a bit of a surprise. Our new players came in and did not miss a beat. The kept the pressure on and didn’t deviate from our plan. That is the trick with new players. How quickly you can get them comfortable and help their confidence. I know we will have ups and downs but tonight was real interesting to watch. I’m proud of the girls play.
Next up for the Badgers is a home game against Saguaro 12/4/18, we hope to see you there.
