Expectations continue to rise for the Badger girls soccer as they faced the Saguaro Sabercats in their second game of the season. The Badgers started flat and slow as the Sabercats looked to jump on the scoreboard early. Senior goalkeeper Becca Norris was able to tip a long shot headed for the upper corner off the crossbar in the sixth minute keeping the game tied at zero. Coach Campuzano commented, “I’m not sure if it was the sound of the ball hitting the post or watching Becca make a great save but from that moment we started to wake up”. It would take the Badgers until the 22nd minute but Junior Sawyer Magnett would take an Emma Alvarez pass and slip home the first goal of the game. Magnett would add her second goal of the half off of a Kari Kasun pass slamming a ball through the Sabercat keeper.
The second half would have a different Badger start as they took control of the game with a better team effort, especially at the defensive end. “That is the team that I enjoy watching. We decided to win the loose balls, pass the ball and our movement was great”, commented coach Campuzano. Lily Jensen opened the Badger scoring in the second half off an assist from Emma Alvarez. Shortly after that freshman Ellie Magnett would take a Katie Kasun cross and flick the ball into the back of the net for her first goal as a Badger. Emma Alvarez would complete the scoring off of a long Lilly Jensen run and cross that would close the game out 5-0.
“After the game I told the team how proud I am with their progress. Whether it’s the starters, new players or freshman everyone is working hard to not have a drop off in our play. They come in and keep the play real smart and quick”. “Each game will increase in difficulty but I like our progression so far” concluded coach Campuzano.
The Badgers hit the road to face Poston Butte down in San Tan Vally on 12/6/I8. If you are in the area, come out and watch the Badgers.
