In a rematch of last years state quarterfinal game, the Prescott Badgers beat Estrella Foothills by a score of 2-0. Coming off three weeks of inactivity there was a lot of uncertainty leading up to the game for Coach Campuzano. “This was the first year I did not practice over Christmas break. Playing ten games prior to the break the team needed a mental rest as well as time to heal. So heading into the game there were a lot of question to be answered”.
The Badgers started the game with plenty of energy and was able to shake of the rust. They controlled the pace of play and had many first half chances but were not able to score. The first goal would come in the second half when freshman Kari Kasun was dragged down in the penalty by two Estrella Foothills players. Sawyer Magnett would step up and convert the penalty for her 11th goal of the season. Rebekah Norris was called on to make two big saves in the second half but the Badger defense was in control all night long. Allowing only those two shots, the defense helped the team repeatedly build out of the back and set up numerous scoring opportunities.
Midway through the second half freshman Ellie Magnett would score her third goal of the season off a nice pass from a Emma Alvarez to put the game out of reach at 2-0. “This team never has a game off. We played 5 games in 6 days prior to the break. We beat a 6A school and a couple 5A schools and the girls really showed their class. They have been tested all season and so dominating a team as good as Estrella Foothills was just another step toward their ultimate goal”, concluded Coach Campuzano.
