Coming into the season the goal for the Badgers girls soccer team was to play better teams in order to test themselves early in the season. Seton Catholic Sentinels proved to be a tough test but the Badgers passed. “The girls seemed flat and tired but kept the ball for long periods of time. We had our chances in the first half but we did not take them” said coach Campuzano. The Badgers freshman wing back Emma Stover had a great first half chance. Pressing forward she stole the ball from the Sentinel defender dribbled along the end line and hit her shot off the crossbar and drop straight down but not into the goal. Other chances want begging as numerous shot missed wide or were punched aside but the Seton Catholic goal keeper. The first half would end with Sawyer Magnett converting a penalty kick after a Badger winger was pushed in the back and knocked over in the box.
The second half would see the Sentinels gain momentum playing repeated long balls trying to break the Badgers defense. It would lead to a mistake by the Badger back line as they would let the Seton Catholic forward push through the back line and finish her break away drawing the game level at one. Prescott would make a final push missing in close shots and breakaways. “When balls are hitting the crossbar and we aren’t finishing the tap in, you start to think it just isn’t your night”. Concluded Coach Campuzano. It would be an Emma Alvarez corner kick that found the back of the net with three minutes remaining that would seal the victory for the Badgers.
The Badgers are 4-0 and travel to play Greenway High School on a Thursday.
